The Free Dictionary defines the word ‘humaitarian’ as “one who is devoted to the promotion of human welfare and the advancement of social reforms.” It can also be defined as showing concern for the welfare of humanity, especially in acting to improve the living conditions of impoverished people. There was the need to specially recognize the need for this act because it is an evidence that you have a good heart. Being a humanitarian makes you meet different people, cultures and ways of life.
It sheds light to the goings on of the world around you, mostly to parts of the world that are underdeveloped and have people that are less privileged. An individual’s involvement in humanitarian work involves personal growth and development, it teaches compassion and commitment. World Humanitarian Day is an avenue to recognize those who put themselves in the line of danger and inconvenience to help others. This day can also be seen as an opportunity to celebrate that sameness of the heart that propels humanitarian work in the world. There is the need to be an active helper of humanity.
Another aspect to humanitarian work is Humanitarian aid. It provides a commitment to support vulnerable host populations that have experienced a sudden emergency, requiring ongoing assistance to maintain or improve their quality of life. Though there are varying branches that are associated with it, such as, values, vision, work ethic, physical strength and programs, most function under one global principle of being a humanitarian: to protect those that vulnerable or less privileded by, reduce suffering, improve well-being, human longevity, and quality of life. However, many stakeholders believe that humanitarian aid has been futile in delivering on their promises because of the inability to organize and duplicate services. This results in a futile effort to produce any form of impact. However, being a humanitarian should not be restricted to these organizations, to those that have decided to carry the mantle. Everywhere around us we see people that are in need. Martin Kornfled said “I bet if we all do one random act of kindness daily, we just might set the world in the right direction.’’ If we all developed the good side to us our global community will be much happier. Charles Dickens also said “No one is useless in this world who lightens the burdens of another.”
Yes,we cannot be everywhere…we are HUMAN and that’s what we should allow drive us.
